A Dream of the Earth
The Project
A Dream of the Earth: Cultivating Community on Hawaiian Soil is a documentary set on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island in Hawai’i, where the Rainbow Bridge community is in the early stages of creating a sustainable paradise. The film follows the journey of individuals who, without planning, find themselves stewards of a large farm. What begins as an unexpected responsibility becomes a profound journey of connection to the land and each other.
Against the lush Hawaiian backdrop, the documentary explores the core themes of deeper human connections, raising children in a village setting, and growing nutrient-rich food. As the Rainbow Bridge community builds its farm and infrastructure, the film captures the spirit and determination of diverse individuals coming together to create a new way of life, rooted in permaculture and communal living. They face the challenges of financial strain and physical labor, but through resilience and shared purpose, they find small triumphs along the way.
Through heartfelt reflections, “A Dream of the Earth” emphasises the importance of ecological stewardship and reconnecting with forms of capital beyond the financial—relationships, time with loved ones, and spirituality. The community learns that working the land is not just about sustenance but about cultivating bonds with each other, teaching their children valuable lessons, and creating a sustainable future.
This documentary is a celebration of the possibilities that emerge when people come together with a shared vision of harmony and abundance. It offers a hopeful glimpse into the journey of building a life that nurtures both the earth and the human spirit, inspiring viewers to consider a lifestyle that prioritises sustainability, unity, and well-being.
